What Is Your Passion?

Thomas Edison Said,

“If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life”

Could it be that simple? Knowing your purpose and reason for being could be as simple as doing what you love.

Am I being naive to think that it could be that clear, that simple? Here is what I know. It’s not as challenging to figure out as we make it. I didn’t say it was easy; I said it was simple. Nothing is easy about walking out your dream or working to accomplish your goals. It takes a maximum amount of effort to get to where you want to go with your life, but as far as discovering what that dream is, let’s not make it more complicated than it needs to be.

What would you be doing with your life if money, resources, time, and connections were no object? Do you like what you are doing? Does it make you want to jump out of bed in the morning? Is it deep enough in you that you will press through and gain ground when it gets tough, or is it something you are doing merely to exist?

Why are you doing it if you don’t love or have passion for what you are doing?

There was a time in my life when I was starting an organization that I was genuinely passionate about. To make fun of it, I had to do a job that paid my bills but was not what I was passionate about. It was not in my wheelhouse. It wasn’t my strength, gift, or skill set. I wouldn’t say I liked it. The people who worked there were living in mediocrity and wanted everyone else around them to be just as mediocre. It was a hostile environment, and it was adding very little value. Every day, I jumped out of bed and went to that place so I could pay my bills to ensure that I could continue to do what I was genuinely passionate about.

Even though my passion was giving me the impetus to move forward, there came a point where I had to quit that job because it was everything I didn’t want for my life. I found a way more aligned with my passion, and my life has continued to move down that track. That experience so affected me that it pushed me to refine my understanding of what I was truly created for, and I have been pursuing that with all my heart since then.

I realized that the passion of my heart, which stirred me like no other, caused me to want to jump out of bed in the morning and face the obstacles and pressures again and again to add value to people by producing potential in leaders. To help people mine out the possibility that is on the inside of them. In every context, that is what I end up doing. If I lead the church, my focus will be developing leaders who help people find purpose. If I am working on global efforts, I find it’s not need or compassion that motivates me, as much as it sees potential in people who need the opportunity to develop it.

I can go to a movie, and if it’s about someone who realizes their potential against all odds, I will be emotionally moved by it at a greater level than those around me because it’s my passion.

“Your passion is directly related to you reaching your potential.”                -John C. Maxwell

That isn’t all there is to it. However, it is a massive step in the right direction. What do you like to do? What is it that makes you passionate? Do you feel passionate about what you are doing with your life? What are you going to do about it?

I am by no means saying to quit your job and run off and act crazy, but I am saying, how long are you going to wait to make your dream a reality? When are you going to make a plan to do what you love to do? When are you going to do what will add value to others? A lot of different things indicate your purpose, but your passion is a big one.

So I have a question for you…WHAT DO YOU WANT?
