There is much in culture today that makes a person feel engaged but doesn’t actually achieve engagement.
Engagement is being actively involved in meaningful and authentic interactions with others. It requires true interdependence.
There are far too many things in the world that, in the name of engagement, actually disconnect us from ongoing, deepening and real relationship.
The world has become more about issues and groups than it is about people. Having a relationship with an idea is not the same as relating to people.
Leaders are not merely theorists or wielders of opinion. Leaders are influencers who gain influence by adding real value to real people by really serving.
Engaging others is to know them and to be known by them. It is filled with conversation and collaboration. Whether personally or professionally.
Before long one will look up and see a completely disconnected world with more stuff, more things to do, but less connection.
So the challenge is to get off the sidelines and take responsibility for engagement. It is not something that just happens. It has to be sought after intentionally.
No more living in the land of theories and opinion, but instead intentionally engage the world by engaging people and reject outright the cultural shift towards disconnection.
Leaders connect, leaders engage. Leaders coach, and inspire and motivate others towards further connection. That what leaders do!
Growth, clarity, maturity and development all come through engagement, so get in the game.
